D.A.F. – “Kinderzimmer” (2003)

Eu amo o dinamismo e o minimalismo desta dupla! Os D.A.F. ajudaram-me a amar a língua alemã. Danke schön D.A.F!

GITANE DEMONE QUARTET – “Bells For Barbara” (2018)

Aquelas letras encantam-me.

ELROND – “Maladaptive” (2019)

Sinto-me totalmente envolvido pela música deles.

ÖTZI – “Hold Still” (2020)

GENEVA JACUZZI – “Clothes On The Bed” (2008)

Ela é, pessoalmente falando, a minha deusa da New Wave! Talvez “Clothes On The Bed”!

MENÇÕES HONROSAS

KAP BAMBINO – “Batcaves” (2009)

MEDIO MUTANTE – “Another Land” (2015)

SELOFAN – “Snakes” (2016)

Isso eletrifica-me. A cumplicidade deles é linda no palco.

MERCURY REV – “Tonight It Shows” (1998)

———— ENGLISH VERSION ————

The work of the French outfit LOVATARAXX came under our radar through the hands of Unknown Pleasures Records last November, when they released the album Hébéphrénie – a tribute to the goddess of youth, of the same name – that marked their official debut. With great emphasis on the additive production of a strong black personality, Hélène and Julien quickly conquered the most attentive scene’s audience by their synthwave aesthetic, where dark environments and the gloomiest electronics predominate on a large scale.

About a year after that release and, two months after being asked to reinterpret one of the Absolute Body Control‘s themes for the Oráculo Records tribute compilation, we found it pertinent to challenge the duo to join our guest list for another edition of our monthly rubric “7 ao mês“. We asked for seven names but LOVATARAXX wanted to include four more honorable mentions. Take the opportunity to learn more about the influences behind LOVATARAXX dominating electronics, by reading their own words, below.

We could have spoken of all the cold wave, post-punk, dark electronics, minimal, ebm bands that inspire us, but it would have been too obvious, so we won’t mention The Cure, Bauhaus, Fad Gadget, Cabaret Voltaire, etc in those lines.

D.A.F. – “Kinderzimmer” (2003)

I love the dynamism and the minimalism of this duo! D.A.F. helped me to love the German language. I learned this language at school for years and couldn’t find it musically seducing. Now I really think that it’s a beautiful language. Deutsche Sprache is so krass! Danke schön D.A.F.! I never feel alone in my “children’s bedroom” thanks to this song.

GITANE DEMONE QUARTET – Bells For Barbara” (2018)

Gitane Demone is one of my favorite singers, in all styles of music combined. Her voice resonates like pure, “above and beyond” witchcraft. Those lyrics are incantations to me. I wear often a t-shirt of GDQ on stage and it brings me good luck! I like the way the deep bells from the beginning of the song are turning into distorted glockenspiel at the end. The guitar’s riffs and layers are also very impressive, Rikk Agnew is a wonderful guitar player! This song is full of tension, this is like a combination of energy and despair. It would be interesting to make a compilation of the best songs with bells instrumentation, by the way. I have for instance in mind the song “The Bells” by Lou Reed

ELROND – “Maladaptive” (2019)

They are our homies from abroad. This electronic duo is mesmerizing on stage! I would say that their music is a little bit epic somehow. In any case, their tracks speak right to the “peaceful virtual vintage Microsoft knight” living in me. It sounds scratchy, and soft, acid, and sweet at the same time. This is maybe relevant that Elrond is the only band without lyrics and voices that we chose for our Threshold Magazine playlist.

PLATTENBAU – “Security” (2018)

Plattenbau are our good friends from San Francisco. This a southing electronic project, with deep waves of sounds and enchanting ethereal voices. I feel totally envelopped by their music. To me this is a dark romantic band, musically speaking. I can imagine some kind of anxiety, threat, and tragic feelings in their songs. For instance, the track “Security”: It reminds me of the Latin word “Securis”, which means “Axe”. Too much security can be scary and “(h)arrowing” sometimes. Interesting for you and Threshold‘s readers: Plattenbau has been on tour in Portugal a couple of times.

ÖTZI – “Hold Still” (2020)

Our favorite post-punk band from today! We saw them playing two times and are waiting for the third time. To me this is like the Siouxsie and the Banshees from nowadays. Their melodies are catchy and frantic. I would say melancholic and full of hope at the same time? Last but not least: they are really good musicians! You can feel it immediately when you see them playing. Go listen to them live when they will be on tour, don’t miss this opportunity!

SEVERED HEADS – “Confidence” (1986)

Severed Heads is an electronic band formed in 79. Their music is oniric, experimental, really ahead of their time. The track “Confidence” is a mix of collages, samples, and melodies. A Severed Head‘s album is definitely a “must-have” in a collection. (I just saw that Medical Records is making some reissues.) I grab one of their vinyl during a tour in the US and realized that they were on tour just one month after our departure… such a pity!

GENEVA JACUZZI – “Clothes On The Bed” (2008)

She’s personally my New Wave goddess! I love all her tracks, videos, and performances. I like her very expressive voice, and this peculiar way to articulate some words. I wish that I have on vinyl the album Lamazze, I am searching for it very often but can’t find it for a decent price! This is difficult to choose one of her songs… Maybe “Clothes On The Bed”!

HONORABLE MENTIONS

KAP BAMBINO – “Batcaves” (2009)

One of my favorite electronic French duo. I went crazy with the song “Batcaves” when it came out. I would love to see them playing live once, this would be probably wild and limitless. The album Devotion is a classic for me. We are listening to it on a loop during our trips.

MEDIO MUTANTE – “Another Land” (2015)

Medio Mutante is a minimal wave band coming from Texas. I don’t even know how we discovered this band? It was a long time ago already.  This band is lo-fi, raw, and very subtle at the same time. It sounds like an old 80’s tape that you have found in a ghetto blaster stuck in the attic. The album Inestable is a collection of hits.

SELOFAN – “Snakes” (2016)

I choose the first song that I listened to from this band… I discovered Selofan totally by chance in a record store in Athens a couple of years ago. I like such good surprises. I dove into their deeply dark energy and that kind of angry incantations. I like the dry production of the drum machines on the track “Snakes”, and also the discreet and hypnotizing bass. It electrifies me. It was such a pleasure to see Selofan playing live in Lyon two years ago… their complicity is beautiful on stage. They really have their own universe, declined in several languages and voices.

MERCURY REV – “Tonight It Shows” (1998)

Those weird band members of the psyché project Mercury Rev met in a house of correction for violent children (this is probably a myth…). Anyway, it seems like they never forgot their childhood:  The album Deserter’s Songs sounds like Disney‘s soundtracks put in a laundry machine. When I am listening to Deserter’s Songs I dive into a distorted odd dream that sounds familiar somehow.
